Last Weekend of School Holidays July 2011

Can't think of what to do in SA on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Last Weekend of School Holidays

source: Dreamstime
It's the last weekend of the school holidays.  This weekend is the perfect time for families to go out and have some fun!

I am certain that you can come up with some fantastic ideas to do with you kids, such as visit your local shopping mall, or perhaps take a wonder down Rundle Mall.

Why not take a stroll along a chilly beach?  Brrrr!  Dare your kids to jump into the ocean!  Have an icecream down the Glenelg Jetty.  Go fishing off Largs Bay.

(the Adelaide & South Australia blog makes no suggestion to chill your children by the beach.  No responsibility will be taken for colds or flus)

*ahem* Perhaps stay in the car and drive along the beachside and dream of summer.  Then take the kids home for a mug-load of hot milo with marshmellows and play Monopoly all weekend.

Whatever you do, we'd love to know about it!

What do you have planned for your weekend?

"Great!" replies the man, nodding at the fish under his arm "Because its's his birthday!"

Swimming in Winter

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Like Swimming? Too cold to swim yourself?  Then this weekend is perfect for you!

The 2011 Australian Short Course Championships

The championships are on at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre from 1st of July to the 3rd.  If you're anything like us, you miss Summer.  Heading out to Oaklands Park for the meet may bring back memories of swimming down the bay on a warm summer's day.  Still, don't lose yourself in your imagination.  We suggest leaving you bathers at home, leave the budgie smugglers to the professionals.

So if you've always sat around the telly watching swimming during The Olympics or Commonwealth games, why not do something different and see it live!  You can find out more at Swimming Australia.

The Body, Mind and Psychic Expo

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Body, Mind and Psychic Expo

Ahh the mystery that surrounds the Wayville showgrounds, where one weekend a year comes the Body, Mind and Psychic Expo.

This weekend, the expo is on again.

The place goes nuts!  There is room for 300 stalls at the expo, with tarot readers, palmistry experts, crystal ball readers, ghost whispers and the slightly odd face readers. Odd because most people can read faces, I'm sure, so that seems quite intruiging.

What I have always been concerned with the expo though, and what I am sure is a running joke in South Australia, is why do the psychic's bother with events such as these?  They should be raking in the dollars with their psychic powers!  If they were psychic, why are they not giving out the lottery numbers to charities, or point on a map where Black Beard's long lost treasure is? This may be worthwhile to challenge a Psychic, to guess how many coins riside in your wallet, that if they guess it, they are pshychic!  Then demand to know where Black Beard's booty is.. A-HARR!

But I am certain I am missing the point about this expo. It's more about learning a culture and a way of life.  It is to learn of goods such as health products and lotions.  Learn of massages, reflexology and aromatherapy.

To learn more, visit the expo's website.  Get along this weekend for something a little bit different.

Whatever you do, be sure to let us know how your weekend went!

North Adelaide sights to see

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

North Adelaide, a wee little trip north of Adelaide City Centre, holds many great attractions.  Places to shop, restaurants, cafes, pubs.  The places to see are many, but here are a few suggestions:

North Adelaide Pub Crawl

There are a lot of heritage listed pubs and they are all amazing.

For the crawl, first find the big church.  You'll know it when you see it.  It is the St Peter's Cathedral.  Look across the road and you'll see the Cathedral Hotel.  Here is a nice starting point.

From here, take a walk north towards the next pub.  Repeat this step after a few drinks at each hotel.  After your legs can no longer walk you to the next pub north, walk towards the nearest cab to take you home.

North Adelaide Restaurants

There is fine dining located in numerous locations.  You pretty much cannot go wrong, with restaurants of several different types from Aussie food to Indian.

North Adelaide is known for its posh nights out with any restaurant located down O'Connell St a great place for a romantic night out or a family feast.  You can even trot towards the end of the main street for an ice cream after dinner.

North Adelaide Movies

Haven't seen a movie for while out on the big screen?  Well, after your dinner, why not catch a flick at the Wallis North Adelaide Cinema?

They play all the latest that the kids are into these days, as well as all the blockbusters.  Don't forget them new fan-dangled 3D moving picture thingies.  They are great!

These are but a few things to pass your weekend away.  Just get out there and do whatever you want!

But why not visit North Adelaide this weekend.  Whatever you do, be sure to let us know how your weekend went!

Wang Wang and Funi

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Do you love Pandas? Of course you do, they are awesome.  Here you can see a Panda on a rocking horse.

Brilliant, right?

Adelaide's Pandas Wang-Wang and Funi may not necessarily be as awesome as this fellow, but they are definitely one of Adelaide's current big attractions.

The Adelaide Zoo has completed their construction for the Panda Exhibit. The Panda's have been ready for visitors for a while now, so if you haven't said hello to these two yet, this weekend is a great opportunity! The Zoo runs Panda Tours if you are extra keen on the full Panda experience.

Don't forget all the other fantastic creatures the Zoo has to offer too, so why not make a day of it?

Send us your Adelaide Zoo photos via Twitter or email tork.southaust@gmail.com.  We'd love what you've got!.

Have a great weekend, what ever you do.

Where to eat in Adelaide

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

How about just getting out there in this fine city of Adelaide and its suburbs and trying some new food from somewhere that you haven't been before?

Don't know where to go that is good?  Well, there are so many different restaurants out there and surely a lot of you reading this would prefer a place near by to where you live.  Well, you can visit somewhere close by, but we recommend venturing away out of the comfort zone of your local area.

So do you want some help finding a new place to eat?  Need some help finding some grub?  Well, why don't you check out Grubfinder.

For travelers to Australia, "grub" is an Aussie word for food, and Grubfinder is full of suggestions for a feed. They specialise in take away food, with current Adelaide menus numbering over 1000 different eateries. So if you got a hankering for your fave take out food, find somewhere new and support an Adelaide local by visiting Grubfinder.

If its too chilly for you this weekend to step foot outside, there are also plenty of places that can deliver to you, ya big lazy bums out there!  Don't be lazy though, take friends or family out and put bums on seats.

Send us your going out photos via Twitter or email tork.southaust@gmail.com.  We'd love to see you enjoying some Adelaide meals.

Have a great weekend, what ever you do.

Soccer in Adelaide

This photo is amazing.  It was taken by Matthew Reid on 8th of October 2008 at Hindmarsh Stadium, coincidently in Hindmarsh.

It is an AFC Champions League match between Adelaide United and PFC Kuruvchi. Adelaide won 3-0, nice! What a fantastic photograph.

Soccer in Australia is growing in popularity fast.  So much that we are certain to receive annoyed soccer fans leaving comments saying "It's called Football, not Soccer".

But recently in the news, it seems that Football/Soccer is set to return to the Adelaide Oval.  Now, we're not talking about A-League, we are talking about the Socceroos returning to Adelaide, an event that hasn't occurred for over 50 years.

Apparently, the last time the Australian National side was at the Oval was in 1958 against England's Blackpool.

Adelaide looks set to hold a friendly in June this year against Serbia.  Nothing has been set in stone just yet, but Melbourne is out of the picture with clashes of games with other football codes.

This is going to be fantastic.  If you live in Adelaide, mark yourself as busy in June so you don't miss this opportunity to see a rare event.

We think it's going to be great, playing Soccer at one of the world's most beautiful sporting stadiums.

Hindmarsh Stadium is still always going to be the home of Soccer/Football in Adelaide.  But we still cannot wait to see this great game make its way back to the Oval after such a long time.

Are you excited? Would you go? Do you call it Soccer or Football? We're interested to hear your comments.

Photo shown here is available for purchase via Matthew Reid's redbubble portfolio

Marree Picnic Races and Gymkhana

Marree, 677km north of Adelaide, just south of Lake Eyre.  This is perhaps as far north off the beaten track in South Australia as it gets.

Each long weekend in June, there is the Marree Picnic Races and Gymkhana.

What is Gymkhana? Gymkhana's are fun days or play days, where a bunch of horses and riders get to gather and take part in different mounted activities and games.  The day is a fun filled family event for the Far North.

The Gymkhana events look exciting to watch. They are an opportunity for horse and rider to show the skills they need to have and use in everyday station life.

Bronco branding is a uniquely Australian way of catching and branding cattle. Riders show how it is done, a journey of times past. Many of these horse and stock skills however are still in use today, so you can get your fill of country life and meet some real Australian stock-men and join in the fun!

There are also novelty events which do not require a horse but a sense of humour and crowd participation.

There's also the children's lolly toss, the ladies "Stepping the Distance" and the men's "Ironman".

Once the sun sets, the music is turned up for great dancing with the locals!

So why not fill up that tank of petrol, plan a safe and careful trip up north and check out a great Aussie country event.

International Rugby Sevens Adelaide

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Adelaide is not the most rugby friendly city in Australia, but one weekend in the year it gets crazy!

The International Rugby Sevens is in town this weekend.  Tickets are selling fast.

It's a jam packed weekend at Adelaide Oval with people dressing up in costumes, meat pies sold by the bucket loads, massive amounts of beer consumed and a few matches of rugby played.

So, there are sixteen nations playing with seven players on either side of the field at one time. You have the home town favourites Australia, those nasty poms England, our rivals across the ditch New Zealand and crowd favourites Kenya, just to name a few.

Saturday sees all the teams battling it out for rankings.  Sunday sees nation against nation again playing against each other based on those rankings, vying for either a Shield, Bowl, Plate or Cup.

It is a great day for everyone, kids, adults, families.  The event celebrates and brings together our multicultural society. There's loads of fun to be had, so if you love your rugby, go down and have a look.  If you've never seen a game, this weekend is the perfect opportunity!

If you attend this weekend's Adelaide Sevens, send us your photos via Twitter or email tork.southaust@gmail.com.  We will post the best ones!

Have a great weekend, what ever you do.

Play Me, I'm Yours

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

This weekend, it's time to play, literally.

You may have noticed the odd scattering of pianos around town.  Wondered what is going on?

Thought it was leftovers from the recent fringe?  Perhaps they could've fallen off the back of one of their trucks!

Well, not quite.  Have a look at the Play Me, I'm Yours site.

The pianos come from the imaginative mind of British artist, Luke Jerram.  Here is one of them on North Tce in front of the Art Gallery. Luke has taken this idea around the world and brought it here in South Australia as part of the Come Out Festival which is running 25th of March to 1st of April.

The idea is to celebrate art in two different methods, both visually and musically.  They are to connect people together through art and music, connecting friends, family and strangers on the street.

More than 30 pianos will be delivered to the Adelaide streets, metro areas and some regional communities.  Each piano is adorned with "Play me, I'm Yours".

So, what we thought you can do this weekend is to find as many of these pianos as you can and take a picture with it.  Send it in via twitter or tork.southaust@gmail.com and we'll upload the best ones.

Don't forget, when you find a piano, you've got to bash out a few tunes too.  Don't be scared to tinkle the whites, that's what they are there for!

So go on!  Get out there!  See how many you can find!!  Have a great weekend!

Adelaide Clipsal 500 review

The day is Saturday, 19th March 2011. I previously received a complimentary Trackside ticket during the week to see the Clipsal race for this day.

Now, never being a big fan of the V8s and never watching very much on the telly, I was actually excited to just see what all the fuss was about. Being more of an F1 racing fan, I figured I'd give it a go, seeing as I should help out good ol' Adelaide events with my feet (and beer money). I enjoy racing, but never actually seen a live racing event!  How very sad.

So, I've only got a two hour time frame for the event (unfortunately had other engagements that day).  Im there, standing in a fairly long line to get in at Gate 3.  A faint waft of cigarettes, B.O. and bourbon floats through the air.  Yes! Thats the spirit!

I get to the first corner for an early race that has just started.  Not sure which race it was, but it was close to 11.30am, so perhaps someone could fill me in.  Anyway, at the corner near Gate 5.  Got my camera ready to take a shot at the point where the petrol machines accelerate down the straight.  They sweep around the corner, I hit click on my camera and ..WHOOSH!..

F***!!!

Oops sorry kiddies, that was my whole body freaking out at the power this beasties have when they accelerated down the stretch.  I thought I was going to die!  I had no idea how AWESOME a fast car's power would be simply standing behind a barrier watching it.  So, points definitely get given to the cars. Fantastic.

Ok, so I have a map of the track and decide I want to walk around it as much as I can.  Here is where I get pissed off.  I want to get to the next corner, but everything is barricaded off.  I ask gate staff what is the best way to go to get to this corner (whilst pointing to it on the map).  They said "Oh, you have to leave and go around to the next gate and get back in".  Ok, so I got stamped and left.

What felt like ten minutes later, on a sunny day without even having a beer in my hand, I walked around the outside without being able to see any of the only race I could have seen in my two hours.  After finally getting the gate, I found I couldn't even get to the corner I wanted.  I pretty much walked past it to get to the next gate. Gate security fail.

Anyway, got back in, lost 5 kilos off the waist from the walk (can't complain about that) and decided to head towards a bridge everyone seemed to be going towards.  Ok, good idea, lets do that.  Waited five minutes in line to just get onto this bridge. Took what felt like another five minutes to get to the other side of the bridge.  Got there to be told "Sorry, you can't go any further on a Trackside pass".  So you think there was any other direction I could have gone from there?  No, back on the bridge to whence I came!

Man, what a nightmare.  This event might be all right if they got their shit together.  I've spent a good part of my day wasted and I'd so been looking forward to this event.  Now I just wanted to go home, after a beer first of course!  Anyway, I knew there were some XXXX Angels somewhere nearby, so I went and watched their performance.  Ahhh, thanks girls, much better.  Even gave me some souveniers.

Well, I dont really want to bag an Adelaide event, but overall I would have to say that it was a big let down. From my perspective, it was unorganised for your general admission spectators. You'd have to go to the event at least once or twice to figure out how it's best to get around.  I guess it's like most events, but I'd be more pissed if I actually paid for my ticket.  It is disappointing that two event staff members weren't sufficiently trained and had let down one useless person like me, where they should have said "turn around and use that bridge behind you", which I found out later in the day.  Perhaps it would have worked better in my favour if I said "I'm probably reviewing this event on a blog", but that would have ruined my lovely experience.

What brings Clipsal up though are these awesome machines that run around the tracks, the gorgeous grid girls (and you lovely XXXX angels) and the passion of the V8 fans.  I loved seeing so many people supporting the event, even if it is designed like a rat maze with the prize cheese sitting somewhere in Brazil.

Here are some happy snaps of the day, hopefully I get a chance again next year to go again.  Maybe my luck will improve by then.

Revenge for Clipsal 500 causing traffic jams

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Sick of traffic this week being abhorrent in Adelaide? So are we.

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide has made traffic in the east end of the city terrible, slow and almost impossible.  If you are pissed off because of it, why not get your revenge on the V8 bastards!

Here's what you do: Purchase a ticket to the race this weekend.

"What?!" I hear you say.  But wait, I'm going somewhere with this.

Go to the event and drink as much beer as you possibly can.  The more beer you consume, the less chance other V8 fans can drink it!  If enough people get on board, then there is an awesome chance of having no beer left at all!

This will annoy the hell out of the fans.  They would not want to come next year to an event that cannot provide enough grog.  Soon enough, the event will not get enough attendees and fold, therefore no more race and no more clogging of the roads for the eastern suburb dwellers.

Otherwise, if you don't care about the blocked traffic and you are a V8 fan, head down to this weekend's Clipsal 500 and drink as much beer as you can.  Don't forget to enjoy yourself!

Please remember: don't drink as much as you can at Clipsal.  If you couldn't tell, we're just kidding ;-) Drink responsibly and don't drink drive either.

Send your weekend photos to tork.southaust@gmail.com and we'll post the best ones.

Have a great weekend!

Adelaide Locust Plague

Adelaidians have been outnumbered this weekend by Locusts in plague proportions!

Following on from our Locust Hunting - What to do on the weekend idea, here are what people have been through!

MissBunnyStrut just polished off her cocktails in the City when she was rudely interrupted!
(can you spot it?)

MissBunnyStrut shows us the locusts in the Garden, all freaky and blue

Holy Crap! Melissa in the Yorke Peninsula emailed this photo in. Obviously it was a fight to the death between a Scorpion and a Cricket and she has caught the aftermath!

derekandkong taken this shot. Norwood Oval 12th of March 2011. Ain't it pretty?

Hang on a sec, derekandkong has got a bit closer. Can't quite tell from this far, are they...??

Omigod, they are, LOCUSTS!

Thanks for the pictures folks.  Creepy huh? :-)
