Play Me, I'm Yours

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

This weekend, it's time to play, literally.

You may have noticed the odd scattering of pianos around town.  Wondered what is going on?

Thought it was leftovers from the recent fringe?  Perhaps they could've fallen off the back of one of their trucks!

Well, not quite.  Have a look at the Play Me, I'm Yours site.

The pianos come from the imaginative mind of British artist, Luke Jerram.  Here is one of them on North Tce in front of the Art Gallery. Luke has taken this idea around the world and brought it here in South Australia as part of the Come Out Festival which is running 25th of March to 1st of April.

The idea is to celebrate art in two different methods, both visually and musically.  They are to connect people together through art and music, connecting friends, family and strangers on the street.

More than 30 pianos will be delivered to the Adelaide streets, metro areas and some regional communities.  Each piano is adorned with "Play me, I'm Yours".

So, what we thought you can do this weekend is to find as many of these pianos as you can and take a picture with it.  Send it in via twitter or tork.southaust@gmail.com and we'll upload the best ones.

Don't forget, when you find a piano, you've got to bash out a few tunes too.  Don't be scared to tinkle the whites, that's what they are there for!

So go on!  Get out there!  See how many you can find!!  Have a great weekend!

Adelaide Clipsal 500 review

The day is Saturday, 19th March 2011. I previously received a complimentary Trackside ticket during the week to see the Clipsal race for this day.

Now, never being a big fan of the V8s and never watching very much on the telly, I was actually excited to just see what all the fuss was about. Being more of an F1 racing fan, I figured I'd give it a go, seeing as I should help out good ol' Adelaide events with my feet (and beer money). I enjoy racing, but never actually seen a live racing event!  How very sad.

So, I've only got a two hour time frame for the event (unfortunately had other engagements that day).  Im there, standing in a fairly long line to get in at Gate 3.  A faint waft of cigarettes, B.O. and bourbon floats through the air.  Yes! Thats the spirit!

I get to the first corner for an early race that has just started.  Not sure which race it was, but it was close to 11.30am, so perhaps someone could fill me in.  Anyway, at the corner near Gate 5.  Got my camera ready to take a shot at the point where the petrol machines accelerate down the straight.  They sweep around the corner, I hit click on my camera and ..WHOOSH!..

F***!!!

Oops sorry kiddies, that was my whole body freaking out at the power this beasties have when they accelerated down the stretch.  I thought I was going to die!  I had no idea how AWESOME a fast car's power would be simply standing behind a barrier watching it.  So, points definitely get given to the cars. Fantastic.

Ok, so I have a map of the track and decide I want to walk around it as much as I can.  Here is where I get pissed off.  I want to get to the next corner, but everything is barricaded off.  I ask gate staff what is the best way to go to get to this corner (whilst pointing to it on the map).  They said "Oh, you have to leave and go around to the next gate and get back in".  Ok, so I got stamped and left.

What felt like ten minutes later, on a sunny day without even having a beer in my hand, I walked around the outside without being able to see any of the only race I could have seen in my two hours.  After finally getting the gate, I found I couldn't even get to the corner I wanted.  I pretty much walked past it to get to the next gate. Gate security fail.

Anyway, got back in, lost 5 kilos off the waist from the walk (can't complain about that) and decided to head towards a bridge everyone seemed to be going towards.  Ok, good idea, lets do that.  Waited five minutes in line to just get onto this bridge. Took what felt like another five minutes to get to the other side of the bridge.  Got there to be told "Sorry, you can't go any further on a Trackside pass".  So you think there was any other direction I could have gone from there?  No, back on the bridge to whence I came!

Man, what a nightmare.  This event might be all right if they got their shit together.  I've spent a good part of my day wasted and I'd so been looking forward to this event.  Now I just wanted to go home, after a beer first of course!  Anyway, I knew there were some XXXX Angels somewhere nearby, so I went and watched their performance.  Ahhh, thanks girls, much better.  Even gave me some souveniers.

Well, I dont really want to bag an Adelaide event, but overall I would have to say that it was a big let down. From my perspective, it was unorganised for your general admission spectators. You'd have to go to the event at least once or twice to figure out how it's best to get around.  I guess it's like most events, but I'd be more pissed if I actually paid for my ticket.  It is disappointing that two event staff members weren't sufficiently trained and had let down one useless person like me, where they should have said "turn around and use that bridge behind you", which I found out later in the day.  Perhaps it would have worked better in my favour if I said "I'm probably reviewing this event on a blog", but that would have ruined my lovely experience.

What brings Clipsal up though are these awesome machines that run around the tracks, the gorgeous grid girls (and you lovely XXXX angels) and the passion of the V8 fans.  I loved seeing so many people supporting the event, even if it is designed like a rat maze with the prize cheese sitting somewhere in Brazil.

Here are some happy snaps of the day, hopefully I get a chance again next year to go again.  Maybe my luck will improve by then.

Revenge for Clipsal 500 causing traffic jams

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend? Every Friday we'll provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea!

Sick of traffic this week being abhorrent in Adelaide? So are we.

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide has made traffic in the east end of the city terrible, slow and almost impossible.  If you are pissed off because of it, why not get your revenge on the V8 bastards!

Here's what you do: Purchase a ticket to the race this weekend.

"What?!" I hear you say.  But wait, I'm going somewhere with this.

Go to the event and drink as much beer as you possibly can.  The more beer you consume, the less chance other V8 fans can drink it!  If enough people get on board, then there is an awesome chance of having no beer left at all!

This will annoy the hell out of the fans.  They would not want to come next year to an event that cannot provide enough grog.  Soon enough, the event will not get enough attendees and fold, therefore no more race and no more clogging of the roads for the eastern suburb dwellers.

Otherwise, if you don't care about the blocked traffic and you are a V8 fan, head down to this weekend's Clipsal 500 and drink as much beer as you can.  Don't forget to enjoy yourself!

Please remember: don't drink as much as you can at Clipsal.  If you couldn't tell, we're just kidding ;-) Drink responsibly and don't drink drive either.

Send your weekend photos to tork.southaust@gmail.com and we'll post the best ones.

Have a great weekend!

Adelaide Locust Plague

Adelaidians have been outnumbered this weekend by Locusts in plague proportions!

Following on from our Locust Hunting - What to do on the weekend idea, here are what people have been through!

MissBunnyStrut just polished off her cocktails in the City when she was rudely interrupted!
(can you spot it?)

MissBunnyStrut shows us the locusts in the Garden, all freaky and blue

Holy Crap! Melissa in the Yorke Peninsula emailed this photo in. Obviously it was a fight to the death between a Scorpion and a Cricket and she has caught the aftermath!

derekandkong taken this shot. Norwood Oval 12th of March 2011. Ain't it pretty?

Hang on a sec, derekandkong has got a bit closer. Can't quite tell from this far, are they...??

Omigod, they are, LOCUSTS!

Thanks for the pictures folks.  Creepy huh? :-)

Locust Hunting

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend?

Every Friday, the Adelaide and South Australia blog will provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea.

We've got the best long weekend idea for you..

LOCUST HUNTING!

Locusts, crickets, whatever you want to call them, they are everywhere in Adelaide.  Why not do your bit and get rid of these nasty little insects!

Here are some locations that you can find them at:

The Garden of Unearthly Delights

Located in the Parklands at the end of Rundle St in the city, you will find hundreds of these little buggers.  In amongst such Fringe Festival live acts like One Man Lord of the Rings and The Boy with Tape on his Face, we are sure you will catch a bug or two.

WOMADelaide

Located in Botanic Park, WOMADelaide is on again.  There you will find a plethora of the creepy crawlies for you to catch.  Just don't squish any as it may upset the hippies grooving along to the world's best musicians, dancers and DJs such as Afro Celt Sound System and The Creole Choir of Cuba.

Future Music Festival

Locusts might be attracted to awesome beats.  If this is the case, located in Rundle & Rymil Park on Monday is the Future Music Festival.  There will definitely be some fantastic tunes playing loud enough to be heard as far as Gawler, with performers such as The Chemical Brothers, Pendulum, MGMT and many more.  It's more than likely though that the kiddies will squash a majority of the critters in the mosh pits, so a different venue may be more prosperous.

The Adelaide Cup

Monday is a public holiday for The Adelaide Cup. The race track out at Morphettville racecourse will be lusciously green.  This has got to be a locusts dream feed.  We can't let the buggers be happy, get a good feed and multiply!  Perhaps it would be worthwhile having a flutter to increase your savings to get out and purchase multiple butterfly/locust nets.  You can hand them around to people in the area to help you.  My tip is in Race 8, Big Ted.  Currently at 51-1, that will give you a handy profit if it wins!

Now get out there are get catching!  There isn't much time.  These little buggers will take over our fine city without your help this weekend.  They are getting bigger and bigger, look!!

So why not catch some? Go on, get "hopping" *sigh*

We'd love to see your weekend pictures (and locust pictures) via tork.southaust@gmail.com.

Have a great weekend.

Adelaide Zoo Greater Flamingo - Your SA

At the Adelaide and South Australia blog, we encourage folks to tell their own version of Adelaide and South Australia in the Your SA series.

mystafied has sent in this happy snap:

mystafied: It's a photo I took of the Greater Flamingo at the Adelaide Zoo
This beautiful bird was attacked and injured pretty badly about 2 years ago.
It now seems to be doing pretty good.

This magnificent creature is over 70 years old.  The Zoo isn't exactly sure how old it is.

If you haven't seen it, Visit the Adelaide Zoo soon.  Who knows how much longer we'll have this beautiful bird for.

Thank you mystafied for such a pro photograph.  What does everyone think?

Shelann has submitted this wonderful photograph.

Shelann: Just thought you might like this picture. I took it on a recent uni field trip to Kangaroo Island.
We got up early and made it to Remarkable Rocks just in time to see the sun rise. It was, well, pretty remarkable.

I suppose that is why they call it Remarkable Rocks. :-)

Thank you so much.  What a fanastic shot!  What do you think?

Friday Fantastic - What to do in Adelaide on the wknd

Can't think of what to do in Adelaide on the weekend?

Every Friday, the Adelaide and South Australia blog will provide you with a "Friday Fantastic" idea.

As suggested by Jayne13, "why not just jump on an Adelaide Tram? Should be a fun ride!"

Adelaide's trams have had extensive work completed on them.

The beautiful, but rickety, old trams have been replaced with a more modern version.

Haven't been on them yet? Why not give them a go?  See if you think they are better than the originals!

Why not catch a tram to Glenelg for the day?  Soak in some rays, take a swim, walk along the Glenelg Jetty and then jump back on the Tram to whence you came.

Give it a go!  For more information regarding the Trams, visit the Adelaide Metro website.
